The 29-year-old has had a tough time with injuries since signing for Barcelona from PSV back in 2010, and with his contract expiring at the Nou Camp this summer Afellay will be available on a free transfer.
PSV had been linked with a move to bring their former captain back to the Philips Stadion, but according to Spanish newspaper Sport and BBC Radio Stoke, Stoke City are set to sign Afellay in the next few days.
The 49 time capped Netherlands international spent this season on loan with Greek side Olympiakos, but only made 19 appearances after falling out of the first team. A move to England may be the last chance for Afellay to rescue his career, and earn his place back in the Netherlands squad.
