In a day that the Amsterdam Arena paid tribute to the late Johan Cruyff, Ajax returned to the top of the Eredivisie with a comfortable 3-0 win over PEC Zwolle.

Ajax fans marched to the stadium to honour their lost hero, while players adorned a special shirt bearing his face and legendary number 14. Before kick off an emotional tribute was paid before a minutes silence in front of the watching Jordi Cruyff.

cruyff tributeWhen focus turned to the game Ajax didn’t take long to open the scoring with Lasse Schone heading Nick Viergever’s cross into the net after only two minutes. In the fourteenth minute a rapturous applause rang out from the stadium as Ajax fans continued to pay their respects to Cruyff.

Arkaduisz Milik made it 2-0 on the half hour mark, finishing Riechedly Bazoer’s cross at the front post. The in-form Pole then doubled his tally ten minutes later as he received Mitchell Dijks pass on the left side of the area before firing a low strike into the bottom corner.

A rout was on the cards, but it didn’t materialise as Milik hit the bar in search of his hat-trick and late chances for Daley Sinkgraven and Viktor Fischer went begging.

The simple win moves Ajax back above PSV, who won on Saturday, while PEC Zwolle remain ninth.
