The fanatical fans of Ajax stayed away from the first half in protest at the turmoil which currently plagues the club behind the scenes, with both Johan Cruyff and Wim Jonk leaving recently. When the crowd did filter back in at half time they realised that they had missed quite a first half.
In the 25th minute Ajax had the lead through a Joel Veltman header at the back post from Nemanja Gudelj’s cross, but straight down the other end Sander van de Streek headed Cambuur level. However Cambuur’s parity was short lived as a minute later a corner was met by Arkaduisz Milik who headed the home side back in front.
Davy Klaassen then made the scoreline 4-1 at the break, firstly heading in an excellent Kenny Tete cross before sending a fierce strike into the bottom corner when a corner wasn’t cleared.
The second half didn’t live up to the first, but there was a fifth goal from the home side as Joel Veltman’s ball over the top set Amin Younes free and the young German held off his marker before firing into the net.
Because of PSV’s draw with Willem II, Ajax now move four points clear at the top, while Cambuur remain second bottom.
