After months of talks, Ajax have finally confirmed that the Amsterdam ArenA will be renamed Johan Cruijff Arena.

Since Cruyff died from lung cancer last year there has been calls for the Amsterdam Arena to be renamed after the Dutch footballing great. Talks have been ongoing between various parties and the Amsterdam council since then with no agreement forthcoming. Finally, on what would have been his 70th birthday, Ajax have confirmed plans for the stadium to be called the Johan Cruijff Arena.

Finally, on what would have been his 70th birthday, Ajax have confirmed plans for the stadium to be called the Johan Cruijff Arena. All parties have agreed on the tribute to Cruyff but it may take at least six months for the change to be official.

A statement on the official Ajax website read, “The board of the Amsterdam Arena (Stadium Amsterdam), the board of AFC Ajax NV and the mayor and aldermen Sports Participation of the Amsterdam municipality have agreed in a letter of intent to change the name of the Amsterdam ArenA to the Johan Cruijff Arena.

Within six months the agreement in a final contract is to be submitted to the council, the management and supervisory boards of the Stadium and Ajax Amsterdam.”

Ajax have also confirmed that a street, square or bridge in the city of Amsterdam will be renamed after Johan Cruyff.
