Ajax have officially announced that Siem de Jong has returned to the club from Newcastle United, signing a three-year deal.

The 28-year-old left Amsterdam to join Newcastle in 2014 for a fee of £7 million but returns to Ajax after failing to make an impact in England. Several injuries hampered De Jong’s time with the Premier League side, restricting him to only 26 appearances, while he spent time on loan with PSV Eindhoven last season.

Ajax have reportedly paid £4 million to resign the midfielder, who made 244 appearances for the club during his first spell, scoring 78 goals. The six-time Netherlands international will look to add some experience to Marcel Keizer’s midfield and becomes the second crowd favourite to rejoin the club after Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

One man who will not be rejoining Ajax is Nigel de Jong, with the club deciding against signing the midfielder on a free transfer.
