westerWestermann has signed a two-year deal with Ajax following talks between the club and his representatives yesterday.

The defender joined up with the Ajax squad today at their training camp in Austria to meet his new teammates and take part in the official team photo shoot.

The central defender, who can also play as both a left and right back, was still under contract at Real Betis until 2017 but was deemed surplus to requirements by coach Gus Poyet.

Nevertheless, it hasn’t taken long for Westermann to find a new club with Peter Bosz seeing him as the ideal candidate to add some experience to a young Ajax squad.

A number of Bundesliga clubs were interested in the thirty-two-year-old defender, but Westermann’s preference was always to join Ajax because of their participation in the Champions League Qualifiers.

The German defender has played over five hundred games in his career at Greuter Furth, Arminia Bielefeld, Schalke 04, Hamburg SV and Real Betis.
