Ajax warmed up for their Champions League clash against Liverpool with a comfortable 5-1 win over Heerenveen.

Heerenveen headed to Ajax unbeaten so far this season and looking to cause an upset. Erik ten Hag decided to start with Davy Klaassen for the first time since his return, while Lassina Traore started up front and David Neres was on the wing.

In the fourth minute, Ajax took the lead when Mohammed Kudus found Dusan Tadic and the forward finished past Erwin Mulder.

Heerenveen did look dangerous and Andre Onana was forced into a good save to deny Henk Veerman.

In the 28th minute, VAR spotted a handball in the box by Sheral Floranus and Tadic doubled the lead from the penalty spot. Before the break, Ryan Gravenberch set up Kudus, who found the bottom corner to make it 3-0.

Heerenveen pulled one back in the 66th minute when a swift counter ended with Henk Veerman finding the net. However, Ajax were then awarded another penalty after interference from VAR and Klaassen made it 4-1 from the penalty spot.

Substitute Antony then sealed the victory with a lovely curled effort into the bottom corner.

Ajax are now top of the table and can only be overtaken if PSV beats PEC Zwolle later. Heerenveen drops to 6th after their first loss of the campaign.
