Around four-thousand Ajax fans packed De Toekomst stadium to see their super-talented youngsters in action, but they were frustrated by a first chance dominated by visitors Roma. Ajax goalkeeper Stan van Bladeren was forced into good stops to deny Vestenický and Anočić while Di Marinio had a great chance, but missed the target.
The home side struggled to get a foothold in the first half, but after the break they dominated with Robert Muric having a shot saved before Ajax were awarded a penalty on 57 minutes after a handball. However midfielder Abdelhak Nouri’s spot kick was saved.
Ajax continued to create chances before the end but substitute Vince Gino Dekker struck the woodwork as Roma held on to take the match to penalties. After five successful attempts each, Roma’s Paolelli scored his penalty, but Carel Eiting’s smashed effort down the middle was saved.
One of the favourites for the trophy after beating both Barcelona and PSG in the group stages, Ajax exit on penalties. Roma face Manchester City in the last eight.
