De Jong’s current deal ran until 2019 but he expressed doubt’s about his future at the club after struggling for minutes at the start of the campaign, However, the midfielder has played his way into Marcel Keizer’s starting line-up recently and has caught the eye with excellent performances against PSV and Excelsior in the past week.

Big European clubs are starting to be linked with the 20-year-old, but according to De Telegraaf, De Jong’s agent has verbally agreed to a new deal with Marc Overmars, which will tie him to the Amsterdam club until 2022.

Speaking to Fox Sports, De Jong confirmed the news, “Yes, I also read it in the media, I knew there was a conversation between my agents and Ajax.

“Yesterday (Thursday) I spoke to my agent by phone, he said: “tomorrow we will sit down after the training”, so when I leave, I will sit down with my agent and I will hear it.”

De Jong then gave his reason for the renewal, “I do not think there are much better clubs for young players than Ajax.”
