Ajax are in the Champions League semi-finals after a sensational 2-1 victory over Juventus in Turin.

After the 1-1 draw in Amsterdam last week, Ajax headed to Turin with all still to play for. Erik ten Hag placed Noussair Mazraoui at left-back in place of the suspended Nicolas Tagliafico, while Frenkie de Jong was fit to start.

After a quick start from Juventus, the game evened out but Ajax were dealt a blow when Mazraoui suffered an ankle injury and had to be replaced by Daley Sinkgraven.

The first big chance of the game was for Ajax and Donny van de Beek should have scored from close range but his effort was too high and flew over the bar.

Ajax were getting comfortable but in the 28th minute, a corner was met by a free Cristiano Ronaldo, who headed in the opening goal. Ajax protested for a foul but replays showed that it was Matthijs de Ligt that pushed over Joel Veltman and not a Juventus player.

The goal didn’t break Ajax’s spirit and in the 34th minute, a Hakim Ziyech shot deflected into the path of Van de Beek, who calmly found the bottom corner to make it 1-1.

Juventus made a change at the break with young sensation and ex-Ajax target Moise Kean replacing Dybala. However the first big chance of the second half was for Ajax. A nice team move ended with Hakim Ziyech being played in on goal but his strike was sensationally kept out by the left hand of Wojciech Szczesny.

Minutes later, Szczesny saved Juventus again by tipping over a curling Van de Beek effort from the edge of the box. Kean drilled wide but just after the hour Ajax broke three on two but Pjanic got back to prevent Ziyech from tapping in Tadic’s cross.

The chances came and went for Ajax but finally, in the 67th minute, they got the goal they deserved. De Ligt towered over two Juventus defenders to head in a corner.

Juventus pushed for an equaliser but Ajax were unlucky not to get a third with Ziyech’s lovely strike disallowed for offside before Lasse Schone fired a volley wide.

In the last minute, VAR looked at a possible handball by Daley Blind but it was correctly not given and Ajax held on for a sensational win.

Ajax now take their place in the semi-finals and will play either Manchester City or Tottenham Hotspur.
