The 20-year-old had to pull out of Ajax’s training session on Wednesday and after further tests it was discovered that De Jong had suffered ankle ligament damage.

Ajax have announced that De Jong will be out for several weeks but the exact time is not yet known. The Amsterdammers face Vitesse, Heerenveen, Sparta and Groningen in the coming weeks as they look to keep their slim title hopes alive.

De Jong has been a revelation for Ajax at centre-back this season, contributing nine assists in 26 matches.
