After his star showing last weekend, Frenkie de Jong was brought into the starting line-up by Marcel Keizer as Ajax looked for a victory to keep them in touch with PSV ahead of their meeting next weekend.
Twente got the first chance of the game but Michael Liendl fired just wide, while at the other end David Neres messed up Ajax’s first big opportunity.
On 33 minutes, Ajax took the lead through Lasse Schone, who placed a curling free-kick into the bottom corner from just outside the box. Minutes later, Ajax were awarded another free-kick for a strong challenge on Justin Kluivert and Schone this time curled the ball into the top corner to make it 2-0.
Just before the break, Twente should have pulled one back after Andre Onana flapped at a corner, but Joel Veltman cleared Tom Boere’s effort off the line before Maximilian Wöber made a last-ditch clearance from the rebound.
Three minutes into the second half, Twente did get a goal as Stefan Thesker headed in a corner. Moments later Ajax should have restored their two-goal lead but Joel Veltman’s header came back off the post and Matthijs de Ligt couldn’t nod in the rebound.
The home crowd pushed Twente on and on 63 minutes, Thesker controlled a pass on the chest before curling an excellent effort past Onana to make it 2-2.
Kluivert then rolled a shot just wide before the winger put Ajax back in front on 79 minutes with a looping shot from just outside the box.
Twente stayed in the game and after Luciano Slagveer hit the post, Tom Boere headed in the equaliser with two minutes to go to earn the home side a point.
The draw means Ajax could be ten points behind leaders PSV by the time they meet next weekend, while Twente end a run of three straight defeats and remain 16th.
