Robben admitted that Netherlands were beaten by a far superior side and believes the defeat will act as a lesson for the national team.

He said, ”We have been beaten by a team that deserved to win. I just heard that Bulgaria are 3-2 up against Sweden if that stays the same and if we win our last three games we still have a chance.

”If we do not qualify for Russia 2018 it will not come down to games like tonight. We played against an opponent who was too good for us.

”We must be grateful that we still have a chance of qualifying after tonight with other results going our way. We must now take our chances and not let it slip anymore in our final three matches.

”Tonight was a big lesson for us. There was a gulf in class. It was really difficult. We knew that if we where to lose here in Paris that we are then hoping that Sweden do the same and then we still have chance of qualifying through the play-offs for Russia 2018.”
