PSV Eindhoven are now bottom of Champions League Group D after a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

atlpsvPhillip Cocu reacted to the dreadful performance against Willem II at the weekend by dropping the out of form Luuk de Jong for a more dynamic attack of Gaston Pereiro and Steven Bergwijn.

Atletico started brightly and created two great chances early on with Kevin Gameiro firing over from inside the box, while Jeroen Zoet did well to save from Diego Godin’s header. However, after surviving the opening fifteen minutes, PSV were largely untroubled for the rest of the first half and could have been ahead with Bergwijn brilliantly setting up Pereiro, but the Uruguayan’s shot was too weak to beat Jan Oblak.

The second half started much like the first, but on 55 minutes Davy Propper gave the ball away in the midfield and a swift counter ended with Gameiro beating Zoet from a tight angle to give Atletico the lead. Ten minutes later it was 2-0 with Antoine Griezmann latching onto Thiago’s pass in the box before sliding the ball under Zoet.

The hosts nearly extended their lead with Gameiro striking the bar, while at the other end PSV failed to mount a comeback as Atletico eased through the last period. The defeat leaves PSV bottom, but a win over Rostov in Eindhoven in two weeks will seal a place in the Europa League,
