Giovanni van Bronckhorst made one change from the side that lost 1-0 to Fenerbahce on Thursday with Steven Berghuis coming in for Dirk Kuyt. The change proved a masterstroke as Berghuis opened the scoring after only eleven minutes with a strike into the bottom corner after combining with Nicolai Jorgensen.
AZ, who should have been full of confidence after their win over Zenit, had no answer to the visitors movement in the early stages and on 19 minutes it was 2-0 as Jan-Arie van der Heijden played a one-two with Jorgensen before lifting the ball over Sergio Rochet.
Jorgensen then got himself on the scoresheet before the break for his 12th goal of the season, finishing off a move involving Tonny Vilhena and Jens Toornstra.
Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Dabney dos Santos came off the bench at half-time as the hosts attempted to make a comeback, but they couldn’t find a way back and Vilhena sealed the victory with twenty minutes left after being set up by Eljero Elia.
The victory ensures Feyenoord stay top, while AZ are fifth.
Now that was a game! Maybe the second best they have played all year-beating Man U at home was the biggest win IMHO. This is how a team needs to answer a disappointment like we had on Thursday.
The rest of the Eredivisie should be worried. Feyenoord is learning how to handle the mental side of things and now they will be better rested and hopefully healthier in the second half of the season.
Good to see that Kongolo was healthy enough to be on the bench today. Hahn has also regained full health. If we can get Van Beek and Vermeer back after the winter window we could be all set for a serious run. Adding Hateboer would also be a nice Christmas present.
