AZ Alkmaar were once again made to rue missed chances as they were held to a draw by second-bottom Roda JC.

The home side looking to return to winning ways after the draw against Groningen and loss at Ajax pinned Roda JC back into their half from the start but struggled to create clear cut chances. Ron Vlaar went closest early on with a long-range strike that whistled just wide.

Eventually, on 33 minutes Alireza Jahanbakhsh broke the deadlock with a stunning strike from a tight angle after being played through by Wout Weghorst.

Roda JC nearly equalised straight away but Tim Krul denied Van Velzen at point blank range. However, a minute later Krul could do nothing to prevent Daryl Werker heading in a corner to draw the visitors level.

In the second half AZ pushed forward looking to regain their lead and with 20 minutes left they were awarded a penalty when Weghorst’s shot was stopped by a Roda JC hand. However, Benjamin van Leer pushed away Weghorst’s poor penalty.

The hosts then couldn’t break through the Roda defence and it was the away side than nearly nicked three points but Tom van Hyfte’s free header sailed over the bar.

The point means remain 6th while Roda JC stay 17th but move four points clear of Go Ahead Eagles.
