The 28-year-old is out of contract in Nijmegen this summer, and AZ have swooped to bring the experienced defender to Alkmaar, pending a medical. Van Eijden will sign a contract until 2020.
Technical director Max Huiberts told the AZ website, “With Rens van Eijden we pick an experienced and very solid defender.
“At NEC, he has long been a driving force and leader. He is a natural leader who knows the ropes. That is something that a young team like AZ needs. ”
Van Eijden started his career with PSV before joining Willem II on loan in 2008. A year in Tilburg then convinced NEC Nijmegen to sign the centre back from PSV, and Van Eijden has been with the club for seven years, making 187 Eredivisie appearances.
