A red card in last week’s defeat at PSV cost AZ Alkmaar their centre back Derrick Luckassen to a suspension and with John van den Brom’s side struggling for cover at the back, midfielder Ben Rienstra was forced to fill in. After nine minutes Rienstra failed to clear in the box and Danny Bakker fired a low shot into the net off the post.
AZ took initiative after the goal, but ADO created the best chances with Mike Havenaar heading straight at Coutinho, while the goalkeeper also denied Roland Alberg.
After the break AZ continued to struggle in front of goal and it was the away side who should have sealed the win with Edouard Duplan and Alberg wasting good opportunities. The poor night was compounded for AZ with the loss of midfielder Markus Henriksen to injury.
AZ remain 10th while ADO Den Haag climb to 12th.
