AZ Alkmaar had made a good start to their season with progression in the Europa League, but it seemed their trip back from Turkey had taken its toll on the hosts in a first half which saw Ajax storm to a three goal lead.
Anwar El Ghazi fired Ajax into the lead on 14 minutes with a stunning strike into the top corner, and the winger doubled their advantage on the half hour mark, rising to head past Sergio Rochet from ex-AZ star Nemanja Gudelj’s cross. Gudelj then made it 3-0 before the break after beating Rochet with a powerful shot from distance, however the goalkeeper will feel he should have done a lot better.
Vincent Janssen and Joris van Overeem proved to be a nuisance to the Ajax defence in the second half, but neither could bring AZ back into the game, and Jasper Cillessen remained unbeaten in the visitors goal.
A good start to the season for Frank de Boer’s boys as they look to claim back the Eredivisie title.
