Van den Brom was confirmed as the successor to Marco van Basten last week, and his new side got off to a good start against Twente with Thom Haye setting up Robert Muhren to fire past Nick Marsman for his first Eredivisie goal on 28 minutes.
Twente, who had won their last four matches on the bounce, started the second half in determined fashion and within the space of four minutes they turned the game around. Firstly Kyle Ebecilio headed in a free kick from Hakim Ziyech, who then scored himself three minutes later with a fine shot into the far corner after beating two defenders.
Muhren struck the crossbar for the hosts after a swift counter attack, while Luc Castaignos also had to block a goalbound shot from close range as AZ searched for the equaliser. Van den Brom brought Muamer Tankovic off the bench, and it was the on loan forward who finally drew AZ level five minutes before the end with a close range finish after Viktor Elm headed down a corner.
Its now eight games unbeaten for Twente who sit fifth, while AZ Alkmaar are 7th.
