Heerenveen’s have been gradually improving under Foppe de Haan, and after an impressive start in Alkmaar they took the lead through Mitchel Te Vrede on five minutes. The striker met Luciano Slagveer’s cross at the front post to beat Coutinho.
However AZ equalised ten minutes later when Vincent Janssen converted from close range after an excellent run from Mounir El Hamdaoui, who’s shot came back off the post before landing at his strike partners feet. El Hamdaoui then put his side ahead on 40 minutes, racing onto a pass from Janssen before rounding Erwin Mulder and slotting in calmly.
The second half was a poor affair but Janssen decided the game with 20 minutes left, with the striker hammering into the roof of the net after being set up by Alireza Jahanbakhsh.
The win puts AZ eighth in the table, while Heerenveen sit 12th.
