Heracles Almelo’s five game winning streak in the Eredivisie was ended on Saturday as they were beaten 3-1 by AZ Alkmaar.

henriksen azAZ have been disappointing in the league so far and they went into the game on Saturday as underdogs against Heracles, who sit second in the league after an outstanding start to the season.

However the form book was ripped up in Alkmaar as the home side dominated and after 15 minutes Markus Henriksen gave them the lead after good work by both Mattias Johansson and Vincent Janssen. Two minutes later it was 2-0 with Jeffrey Gouweleeuw heading in a corner, and only poor finishing prevented the scoreline being worse for the away side, who were missing the injured Oussama Tannane, before the break.

With 13 minutes left Jaroslav Navratil pulled a goal back for Heracles, but Maumer Tankovic prevented any nerves by sealing the victory for AZ.

The win raises AZ up to 11th ahead of their tie against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League next week, while Heracles remain second, but could be overtaken by either Feyenoord or PEC Zwolle on Sunday.
