AZ Alkmaar’s wait for a league win continues as they threw away a two goal lead against VVV Venlo in a 2-2 draw. Jonas Svensson’s first-half red card proved crucial.

AZ announced on Friday that they had four positive cases of Covid 19 among their first team squad, but the players were not named for privacy reasons. Marco Bizot was suspended, but Timo Letschert and Ferdy Druijf were not among the squad. Bruno Martins Indi did start.

After only two minutes, Jesper Karlsson found the net with an attempted cross to give AZ the lead. AZ completely dominated and Calvin Stengs then doubled the lead after being set up by Jonas Svensson.

It seemed AZ would cruise to victory but before the break Svensson was shown a red card for a rash challenge on Joshua John. Already AZ’s third red card of the season.

AZ had thrown away convincing leads against Fortuna Sittard and Sparta Rotterdam already this season, but it appeared the would hold on against VVV. However, Evert Linthorst pulled one back with a header in the 86th minute.

Then in the 90th, Martins Indi was adjudged to have pulled down his opponent in the box leading to a penalty. Giorgios Giakoumakis made it 2-2 with his spot kick to condemn AZ to their third straight draw.
