AZ Alkmaar defeated PSV Eindhoven 2-0 to move level on points with their rival in the battle for second place.

PSV were hoping to end a run of 15 games without a win against an Ajax, AZ Alkmaar or Feyenoord, but after only four minutes, Jesper Karlsson fired AZ in front after fooling the visitors defence.

After that, PSV created plenty of chances but Mario Gotze missed two big opportunities, while Marco Bizot denied Cody Gakpo. Jonas Svensson did head the ball into his own net, but the own-goal was disallowed because Denzel Dumfries was offside.

PSV continued to look for an equaliser in the second half but it was AZ Alkmaar who scored in the 66th minute. Teun Koopmeiners finished off after good work by Calvin Stengs and Karlsson.

Stengs nearly made it 3-0 before the end but he was denied by Yvon Mvogo.

The victory means AZ Alkmaar are now level on points with PSV Eindhoven in the battle for second. PSV have the advantage at the moment due to a better goal difference.
