AZ Alkmaar got one over former boss John van den Brom as they came away from Utrecht with a 3-0 victory.

Van den Brom departed AZ Alkmaar for Utrecht this summer and was hoping to record a victory over his former side. However, AZ Alkmaar showed why they are the most serious challenger to Ajax at the moment.

Utrecht began the game well but could only create half chances with Sander van de Streek seeing a shot blocked, while Sean Klaiber fired wide.

AZ struggled to create anything but in the 24th minute they had the lead. Teun Koopmeiner’s free-kick deflected off the wall and found the net. Seven minutes later, Oussama Idrissi found the corner to make it 2-0.

Jean-Christophe Bahebeck struck the top of the bar with a header early in the second half and AZ soon sealed their victory afterwards. Calvin Stengs was played through on the right wing and he set up Myron Boadu for a simple tap-in. The goal capped an excellent week for the duo, who made their Netherlands debuts last week.

The scoreline could have been bigger before the end but Owen Wijndal’s strike hit the bar, while Stengs strike found Maarten Paes.

AZ remain comfortably in second while Utrecht are 5th.
