AZ Alkmaar are up to fifth after a simple 3-0 win over Utrecht in the AFAS Stadion.

The hosts took the game to Utrecht from the start and  Guus Til, Joris van Overeem and Wout Weghorst all missed good chances to put them ahead in the opening 20 minutes.

Finally, on 21 minutes the goal came with Teun Koopmeiners, making his first Eredivisie start, curled an excellent strike into the bottom corner from just outside the box.

Utrecht were second best for most of the second half but they nearly equalised before the break with Luz Görtler’s header coming off the bar.

AZ continued to dominate in the second half and after Weghorst hit the woodwork, Alireza Jahanbakhsh did eventually make it 2-0 on 62 minutes with a powerful strike past David Jensen. In the 81st minute, van Overeem settled the win for AZ with a lovely outside of the boot finish after being played through by Jahanbakhsh.

The win lifts AZ to fifth while Utrecht are ninth.
