AZ have been frustrated in the league so far this season, but they went into the clash with RKC on the back of their 4-1 win over HNK Rijeka in the Europa League. They were also able to welcome back Myron Boadu, who was on the bench after recovering from Coronavirus.
After five minutes, AZ had the lead as Teun Koopmeiners crossed for Calvin Stengs to make it 1-0.
Chances came and went for AZ with Albert Gudmundsson hitting the crossbar, while Jesper Karlsson and Stengs also passed up good opportunities to double the lead.
RKC barely threatened at all and in the second half, AZ continued to push forward. After a foul on Gudmundsson, AZ were awarded a penalty but Koopmeiners saw his spot-kick saved.
Slot then decided to bring in Boadu and in the 72nd minute, Gudmundsson did add a second with a close range finish. The forward then sealed the victory in the final moments.
AZ ends their wait for a league win and they are now 9th. RKC sits 13th.
