AZ Alkmaar kick-started their Europa League campaign in week two of the competition’s group stages with a 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao, and John van Den Brom’s side once again looked on course for a good result against the Basque side when they took the lead on 26 minutes. Ben Rienstra’s cross was perfect for Joris van Overeem to steer his shot into the net.
Back came the home side though, who equalised just before the break through Kike Sola, and two minutes into the second half Athletic had the lead from the penalty spot when Derrick Luckassen was penalised for handball. Mikel San José scored the spot kick.
Athletic, however, failed to kill the game and with two minutes to go Vincent Janssen took aim on goal and with the help of a deflection his shot ended up in the back of the net to earn AZ a point.
AZ finish bottom of the group after earning only four points, while Athletic qualify as group winners.
