For the first time in four-and-a-half years, AZ Alkmaar defeated one of the traditional top three. Feyenoord were dispatched 3-0 in De Kuip.

In February 2015, AZ Alkmaar defeated Ajax 1-0 but since then they have lost every league meeting with the Amsterdammers, PSV Eindhoven or Feyenoord.

However, Arnie Slot’s side are aiming for third spot in the Eredivisie this season and they wanted to prove their credentials at Feyenoord, who have had a poor start to the season.

Feyenoord had the best chances of the opening 20 minutes, with Marco Bizot having to deny Steven Berghuis with his fingertips before Jens Toornstra hit the bar.

Five minutes before the break, AZ Alkmaar took the lead when Myron Boadu tapped Owen Wijndal’s cross into the net from close range.

Before the break, Berghuis was lucky to escape with only a yellow after a shocking challenge on Teun Koopmeiners. VAR for some reason did not correct the decision and Feyenoord remained with eleven men.

Feyenoord were rattled and five minutes into the second half, AZ found their second with Calvin Stengs seeing his shot from distance take a touch off Edger Ie before beating Kenneth Vermeer.

The hosts could not find a way back into the game and after a slip by Eric Botteghin, Oussama Idrissi was able to net a third in the 83rd minute.

AZ Alkmaar climb up to third with the victory while Feyenoord are now 10th.
