AZ Alkmaar came from behind to defeat Sparta Rotterdam 2-1 in the AFAS Stadion.

The home side went into the game as heavy favourites and they started brightly with Alireza Jahanbakhsh hitting the post early on. However, on 19 minutes Sparta silenced the home side by taking the lead through Julian Chabot, who scored from a corner.

Sparta goalkeeper Jannik Huth then prevented Guus Til and Jahanbakhsh with fine saves, but he was eventually beaten by Wout Weghorst a minute before the break.

In the second half, Huth put in a heroic performance and continued to frustrate AZ with a string of fine saves to deny Weghorst, Joris Svensson and Oussama Idrissi. It appeared that Sparta were going to hold on for a point but four minutes from the end, Huth was finally beaten by Idrissi and AZ claimed all three points.

The win keeps AZ on course to claim third place, while Sparta remain bottom.
