AZ Alkmaar is still top of the Eredivisie thanks to a 2-1 victory over Utrecht.

Both sides went into the game in fine form with AZ unbeaten all season, while Utrecht had taken 10 points from their last four games.

Utrecht thought they had been awarded a penalty when Serdar Gözübüyük pointed to the spot after a handball from Milos Kerkez. However, after consulting VAR, the penalty was reversed.

AZ then took the lead after 31 minutes through Myron van Brederode, who dribbled toward the box before sending a low strike into the bottom corner.

Both sides traded chances before AZ doubled their lead after the hour mark as Yuki Sugawara hammered a shot into the top corner.

Utrecht then looked for a way back in the game, but Moussa Sylla’s goal just before the end was nothing but a consolation.

AZ remains ahead of Ajax in the table, while Utrecht is 9th.
