The Dutch international ran down his contract with Aston Villa at the end of last season but has been without a club since after suffering a knee injury.
As Vlaar looked to find fitness he began training with his old club AZ Alkmaar, who have today announced that the 30-year-old has signed a deal with the club until the end of the season.
AZ director Max Huiberts told the club’s official site, “We are very pleased with the capture of Ron Vlaar. He gives our selection a huge quality boost.
“I do not need to explain what are his strengths, which everyone can see the last few seasons. Last year he was a driving force behind the success of (Netherlands) at the World Cup.
“Mentally Ron brings a lot. His presence can boost both the performance of the team and the development of other players. ”
Vlaar originally joined AZ as a kid in 1996 and spent ten years with the club before joining Feyenoord in 2006.
