AZ Alkmaar netted a 93rd minute equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw with NEC Nijmegen in the AFAS Stadion.

After only nine minutes, NEC had the lead with Jordy Bruijn netting from close range. The goal went under a VAR review for a possible offside, but it stood.

Shortly afterwards, the game had to be stopped after a group of fans had managed to get into the stadium. They set off some fireworks and climbed over the boarding which led to the pitch.

After the game resumed, AZ went looking for the equaliser but Vangelis Pavlidis hit the post, while Mattijs Branderhorst denied Albert Gudmundsson twice.

AZ struggled to create big chances after the break, while Jonathan Okita thought he had extended NEC’s lead, only to be denied by the offside flag.

Pascal Jansen hoped to force a late equaliser with a number of substitutions as Tijjani Reijnders, Hakon Evjen, Aslak Fonn Witry and Zakaria Aboukhlal all coming on. The changes worked as Evjen set up Aboukhlal to equalise in the 93rd minute.

NEC now sits seventh in the table while AZ Alkmaar are down in 11th.
