John van den Brom’s side are undoubtedly the form team in the Eredivisie and they rushed into a 3-0 lead in the first half. After only three minutes, Vincent Janssen latched onto a poor back pass to prod in the opener, before Markus Henriksen doubled the lead from the penalty spot after Dos Santos was brought down on 32 minutes. Seconds after the penalty more poor defending led to a third with Joris van Overeem profiting to score with a chipped finish over Bram Castro.
Before the break Thomas Bruns hammered a strike into the top corner to pull one back for Heracles, but Alireza Jahanbakhsh restored AZ’s three goal lead just after the hour mark with a strike into the bottom corner from just outside the box.
The home side then threatened a comeback with Mark Jan Fledderus and Wout Weghorst scoring within minutes of each other to make it 3-4, but an own goal from Bruns made AZ comfortable before Ben Rienstra headed in a free kick to seal victory.
The win sees AZ climb to fourth and only one point behind Heracles, who remain third.
