The attacker returned to Amsterdam in January but scored only once in the KNVB Cup and provided no assists, with Babel only appearing five times in the Eredivisie.
Babel’s performances were criticised in the media and by fans. Speaking to De Telegraaf, the forward admitted it had not gone as planned.
He said, “It didn’t turn out to be what I had hoped and expected. I am self-critical and could have brought more. It is a pity that this image lingers now. You are just as good in football as your last game, so suddenly I am ‘ten times nothing’ again.”
Asked what the reason for his poor performances were, Babel responded, “I am not thinking about the excuses, but you ask. I think it did not help that I came to a selection with many out injured and who no longer reached it’s level of the first half of the season. I think this also had an impact on my game, Just like the fact that I have been left, right and in the striker position.”
