There has been much speculation over which country the 17 year old wonder-kid would choose, even though he has represented Belgium at every level from u-15 to u-21.
However on Monday, Bakkali finally ended the uncertainty by confirming his allegiance to the red devils in a press conference.
Bakkali said, “This is entirely my own choice, of course I have talked about it with my family, but I am seventeen years old and myself have made the decision.”
“The Moroccan federation has put no pressure on me, this is a personal choice. And no, I have no conditions to coach Marc Wilmots. I went through all youth ranges of the Belgian national teams and the A-team is a great group, I hope with the Devils to win big and score. ”
Netherlands also tried to lure the youngster into joining their national set up, but Bakkali says this was never an option for him:
“For me it was just a choice between Belgium and Morocco. It was a very difficult decision but one of the heart. That perhaps took some time for the decision was, I do not think illogical. Do not forget that I’m only seventeen and everything is quite fast for me.”
