Early finishes put Bayern 2-0 ahead and despite going in at the break only one goal down, the German champions eased to victory.
Bayern dominated early proceedings and created many openings: Thomas Müller shot wide, Arjen Robben hit the side-netting and David Alaba blazed over the bar within the first ten minutes.
PSV struggled to get a hold of the ball, and switched off from a corner to gift the hosts the first goal. Robben played in Müller, who fired past Jeroen Zoet at the second time of asking.
The home side didn’t finish there, as further pressure saw them hit the post before Joshua Kimmich doubled his side’s lead after twenty minutes. A cross from the left deflected to land on the German’s head from a yard out. Kimmich could have doubled his own tally for the evening shortly after, but he and Robben were denied by Zoet.
PSV finally found some respite towards the end of the half and were unfortunate not to get a goal back when Gastón Pereiro played a one-two and finished neatly past Manuel Neuer. However, the goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside.
The Dutch champions were not to be denied moments later though, as Luciano Narsingh raced into the German’s half and smacked an unstoppable shot past Neuer to haul PSV back into the match on the stroke of half-time.
Clearly buoyed by their goal, PSV started the second-half with much more purpose. Luuk De Jong could have levelled the score but agonisingly headed over a delicious Jetro Willems cross.
Phillip Cocu’s men had Bayern on the back foot for a good fifteen minutes, but were suckerpunched when a traditional Robben run and shot was palmed away by Zoet, only to be nodded in on the rebound by Robert Lewandowski.
From then, only one side had the chances, and that was the home side. They diligently crafted further openings, but Zoet and Hector Moreno denied Müller and Kimmich respectively.
Elsewhere in the group, Athletico Madrid beat Rostov in Russia thanks to a Yannick Carrasco goal, which still leaves PSV favourites to pinch a Europa League spot after the winter break.
