The derby of the north between Heerenveen and Groningen ended in a 1-1 draw in the Abe Lenstra Stadion.

The latest meeting between the two rivals was a disappointing affair from the start with the first shot of note coming in the 28th minute. Warner Hahn was alert to deny Ajdin Hrustic.

In first-half stoppage time, Heerenveen were awarded a dubious penalty via VAR for a handball by Deyovaisio Zeefuik. Hicham Faik made no mistake to fire the hosts in front.

Groningen were furious with the VAR decision and that anger didn’t disappear in the second half when they were denied a spot-kick for an obvious hold by Ricardo van Rhijn on Mike Te Wierik.

A few minutes later, Groningen were awarded a penalty when Kaj Sierhuis saw his shot blocked by the hands of Sherell Floranus. Charlison Benschop made it 1-1 with a calm penalty.

The last fifteen minutes saw both sides go close to a winner but it remained 1-1 at the end.

Heerenveen sit seventh in the table while Groningen are 12th.
