PEC Zwolle played a home game for the first time in the Eredivisie on natural grass after having their artificial pitch removed over the summer. They welcomed Feyenoord, who had new signings Mark Diemers and Bryan Linssen in their starting eleven.
Feyenoord ended last season in great form with Steven Berghuis finishing the campaign as joint top scorer. The winger picked up where he left off by netting the opener in the fifth minute with a drive into the bottom corner from outside the box.
PEC Zwolle pushed for an equaliser but only came to half chances with Thomas Lam firing wide, while Jesper Drost was also off target with a decent effort. Just before the break, Nicolai Jorgensen missed a good chance to make it 2-0.
Halfway through the second half, Lam took down Orkun Kรถkcรผ and Berghuis made it 2-0 from the penalty spot. The forward also completed his hat-trick late on but was denied by goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.
A comfortable win for Feyenoord, who hosts FC Twente next weekend, while PEC Zwolle will look to bounce back against AZ.
