Van Dijk suffered the injury against Leicester City on the 22nd of January and has already missed three Southampton matches.

However, Southampton boss Claude Puel has confirmed that the Dutch international is set to miss another two or three months of action.

He said in a press conference, “He will not be available for many weeks, two or three months.

“It’s an important problem and difficult for us. He is important for the group and the fans with his quality and leadership.

“It’s a blow but we will find a solution. For the semi-final second leg against Liverpool we got a fantastic result without him and we will continue with other possibilities.”

Van Dijks injury could also be a major blow for the Dutch national team who face Bulgaria in a World Cup qualifier at the end of March.
