The winger left Feyenoord for Basel in 2015 but injuries restricted Boetius to less than 20 league appearances over the past two seasons. In January, Boetius left the Swiss side to join Belgian side Genk on loan until the end of the season.

Speaking to Voetbal International, Boetius reflected on his time in Switzerland and stated his belief that he is not suited to the Swiss lifestyle.

He said, “Maybe you have to conclude that I as a person do not fit in Switzerland.

“Swiss are naturally not talkers They are more followers, or rather, performers, or perhaps even better: yes-men I am still too much English, I was the only one with a bit of character, if I wanted to know something… I asked. If I somehow did not agree, I said it. Perhaps this has not helped the relationship between the coach and me. “
