The 18-year came off the substitute bench in the 4-1 first leg win over Groningen and scored his first senior goal. Coach John van den Brom awarded Stengs for his performance by starting him in the second leg on Saturday night. He played his part in the opening goal with a stunning through ball before making it 3-1 with a header.
After the game, Stengs said, ”I was a little nervous but the manager told me to play in a free and in a none inhibited way and work hard and do my job during the match.
”To make my full debut tonight puts me over the threshold. I am from Nieuw-Vennep. I played football there for two years for SV DIOS and after that I went to HFC Haarlem and after that I came to AZ Alkmaar.
”I am part of the Jong AZ squad that has won the second division this season. We have a very good team.
”We played well tonight I am aware of that. I enjoy playing football. Things go really quickly and I am pleased to play in these types of games. I hope to play in the final two games against FC Utrecht but the decision rests with the manager. I am also planning to extend my contract with AZ Alkmaar for another 5 years.”
