The match was a battle of 16th v 18th in the league table, and both sides were in desperate need of a win to try and move out of the bottom three.
It was Cambuur who drew first blood, with Van Brakel heading the home side into the lead after 33 minutes, but the lead did not last long.
Six minute later, a corner routine from NEC Nijmegen ended with Kevin Conboy heading a cross into the bottom corner to make it 1-1 at the break.
Twenty minutes before the end, Cambuur made it 2-1 with Marcel Ritzmaier’s 25 yard drive deflected past the helpless Karl-Johan Johnsson in the NEC goal.
Kevin Brands should have sealed the win for Cambuur late on, but he could only fire harmlessly wide from inside the box, but in the end it didn’t matter as the home side held on for a crucial three points.
The win lifts Cambuur up to 13th in the table, and away from the bottom three, while NEC will remain bottom of the table for another week.
