Frank de Boer’s side struggled to find a way through the bottom side’s defence in the first half, with a Amin Younes strike straight at Leonard Nienhuis the only chance of a poor 45 minutes.
In the second half De Boer threw on Anwar el Ghazi for Lasse Schone, and just after the hour mark the winger provided the breakthrough as his cross was headed in at the far post by Davy Klaassen.
Ajax then had several chances to put the game to bed but El Ghazi fired just wide, Younes hit the post and top scorer Arkaduisz Milik’s effort was saved by Nienhuis.
Cambuur barely threatened the leaders, but in stoppage time a scramble in the Ajax box almost resulted in an unlikely equaliser.
The win sees Ajax remain in front of PSV, while Cambuur are bottom.
