Cambuur are one defeat away from being relegated to the Eerste Divisie after a 1-1 draw against Willem II in Leeuwarden.

cambuur ejfWith De Graafschap stunning Utrecht on Wednesday, Cambuur desperately needed a win against Willem II to keep their slim survival hopes alive.

All was going to plan for the home side as they took the lead on 24 minutes with Jamiro Monteiro finishing off a cross from Jack Byrne. However, the lead only lasted three minutes before Jorden Peters fired in the equaliser from a corner.

The home side pushed for a winner, but Kostas Lamprou made an excellent save from Sander van de Streek, while Xander Houtkoop and Byrne also failed to find the net with good chances. In the 86th minute, Harm Zeinstra was sent off for Cambuur, but Willem II couldn’t make their extra man count.

The point means Cambuur are four points behind De Graafschap and defeat to PSV next weekend will confirm their relegation. Willem II also remain in trouble with the draw not enough to lift them out the bottom three.
