Ajax went into the clash third and three points ahead of Rangers. Neither side had a chance of progressing but Ajax knew only a defeat by five or more goals would prevent them from a place in the Europa League.
Alfred Schreuder began with Owen Wijndal, Kenneth Taylor and Mohamed Kudus as Daley Blind, Davy Klaassen and Brian Brobbey began on the bench.
After only four minutes, Ajax were ahead with Kudus setting up Steven Berghuis to fire the Dutch side in front. In the 29th minute, Kudus doubled the lead with a deflected finish from an Owen Wijndal cross.
Wijndal had a fine half but he went off injured before the break and had to be replaced by Devyne Rensch. The right-back set up Kudus for a third in the second half but VAR ruled out the goal for offside.
A foul by Edson Álvarez on Rabbi Matondo resulted in a penalty for Rangers in the 85th minute and James Tavernier made it 2-1. However, there was no comeback for the hosts as Ajax went right down the other end, and substitute Francisco Conceição sealed Ajax’s victory after being played in on goal by Dusan Tadic.
Ajax finishes third and will now enter the Europa League, while there is a brutal record for Giovanni van Bronckhorst. His side’s 6 losses and -20 goal difference is the worst record for any team in Champions League group stage history.
