Ajax will look to secure their third straight win in the Champions League group stages when they host Chelsea on Wednesday evening. Kick-off in Amsterdam is at 5.55pm.

Ajax have had an excellent start to their Champions League campaign so far with a 3-0 win over Lille followed up by a 3-0 win at Valencia. The two wins have put Erik ten Hag’s side three points clear at the top of the group.

On Wednesday, Premier League side Chelsea visit the Johan Cruijff ArenA and their boss Frank Lampard has stated that Ajax are favourites for the clash.

However, Ten Hag has moved to play down expectations, “I can’t do much with those reflections. We are self-confident, courageous, and have faith, but I maintain that you are not the favourite against a Premier League club. ”

Ten Hag also stated he would be happy with a draw, “And if a tie remains the maximum, we are satisfied with that.”

Ajax go into the game on the back of a 2-1 win at RKC Waalwijk, which means they have now five wins on the bounce and are three points clear at the top of the Eredivisie.

Opponents Chelsea had a poor start to their Champions League campaign with a home defeat to Valencia. However, they bounced back with a 2-1 win in Lille last time out. At the weekend, Lampard’s side defeated Newcastle 1-0 which means they currently sit 4th in the Premier League.

Team News

Ajax have no fresh injury concerns ahead of the tie with Hakim Ziyech confirmed to be fit to start.

Ten Hag does need to decide who starts in defence with Sergino Dest and Noussair Mazraoui battling it out for the right-back slot. Nicolas Tagliafico was suspended for the win over RKC at the weekend, but he will come back into the eleven.

Possible Ajax line-up: Onana, Dest, Tagliafico, Veltman, Blind, Martinez, Alvarez, Van de Beek, Ziyech, Tadic, Promes

Chelsea lost midfielder Ross Barkley to injury at the weekend and travel to Amsterdam without N’Golo Kante, Antonio Rudiger, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Emerson Palmieri. Dutchman Marco van Ginkel is a long-term absentee.

Former Vitesse loanee Mason Mount is in line to start.

Possible Chelsea line-up: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Zouma, Tomori, Marcos Alonso, Kovacic, Jorginho, Mount, Willian, Abraham, Hudson-Odoi

Can Ajax make it three wins in a row?

Ten Hag may think differently, but Ajax will go into this game as favourites against a Chelsea side that is built around a number of talented youngsters.

Ajax looked worryingly open at the back in their 2-1 win at RKC but in the Champions League they are yet to concede a goal and always raise their game for the big occasions. They are a team in excellent form and with more experience at this level recently than their opponents.

Chelsea also head to Amsterdam without Barkley and Kante, which will make their midfield weaker. Ajax will need to get Hakim Ziyech on the ball as much as possible and hope the Moroccan can lead them to a victory, which puts them in an excellent position to reach the knockout rounds.
