PSV Eindhoven got off to a disappointing start in the Champions League as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Shakhtar Donetsk in the Philips Stadion.

Last season, PSV began with a home loss to USG from Belgium and were hoping to avoid any costly points loss. Paul Wanner and Filip Kostic were both brought into the starting eleven.

A sluggish first half saw neither side really create any chances before Shakhtar struck just before the break. Sergino Dest wanted a foul on the halfway line but play went on and Mendoza found the bottom corner.

PSV levelled early in the second half with Dest slotting into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

The home side couldn’t find a winning goal with a couple of last minute free kicks on the edge of the area wasted. Next up for PSV is an away clash against RB Leipzig.
