The defending Premier League champions sacked Jose Mourinho earlier this week and have now turned to Hiddink, who previously coached the club for a short spell in 2009, to step in until the end of the season.
The 69-year-old has been out of work since being sacked by Netherlands in June, but he will now get the chance to redeem himself in the Premier League.
Hiddink told the Chelsea website after his appointment, “I am excited to return,”
“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in the world but is not where it should be at the moment.
“However, I am sure we can all turn this season around.”
Hiddink was only a spectator on Saturday as Chelsea beat Sunderland 3-1. His first game in the dugout will be the tie against Watford on Boxing day.
