Daniel Crowley netted the only goal as Willem II came away from Groningen with a 1-0 victory.

After their 5-1 hammering at Vitesse last weekend, Groningen looked to get their season kick-started at the Euroborg against Willem II, who also lost their opening game against VVV Venlo.

The home side had the best chances in the opening half-hour but Ritsu Doan was denied by Timon Wellenreuther on two occasions.

Willem II barely threatened but in the 33rd minute they took the lead with Daniel Crowley racing into space before firing an excellent strike into the top corner off the underside of the bar.

Tom van Weert and a shot from Ajdin Hrustic both went close to an equaliser before the break and in the second-half Groningen continued to push forward. However, the best chance came in the final minute when Van Weert raced in on goal before sending a shot inches wide of the post.

The victory gets Adrie Koster his first win as Willem II boss but for Danny Buijs the wait goes on.
